In Lafayette’s 5-3 singles win over Lehigh, Ricky Espaillat secured the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 victory; Derrin Lerner, Tomas Grygalis, Tyler Mahaffey and Aidan Mahaffey also won.
The Spencer–Bishop Heelan regional final was scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 3.
Lafayette's tennis teams posted uneven results across the week, with the women falling 5-2 to Monmouth while the men earned a split at the Lehigh Invitational. Lafayette Student News reported that Hanna Ganchi and Ally Bauer secured singles wins for the women, though the team fell short overall. The women's planned Bloomsburg invitational was canceled due to bad weather.
The men's team showed stronger form early, defeating Lehigh 5-3 in singles before sweeping Villanova 4-0 in doubles. However, they stumbled against Temple, losing 8-0 in singles at the same invitational. Meanwhile, in Iowa high school tennis, Spencer and Bishop Heelan advanced to a regional final scheduled for October 3.
Lafayette's women lost 5-2 to Monmouth in a dual match that saw strong individual performances go unrewarded. Lafayette Student News noted that Sophia Bald and Stella Dodd won their No. 3 doubles match 6-2, yet Monmouth claimed the doubles point. Hanna Ganchi and Ally Bauer each earned singles victories, with Bauer securing her first win of the season.
Bauer expressed optimism after her breakthrough. "I hope this will help me keep getting some more wins this season," she said. The women had hoped to compete in the Bloomsburg invitational but the event was called off. Severe weather made the trip impossible.
Lafayette's men started strong at the Lehigh Invitational, beating Lehigh 5-3 in singles play. Lafayette Student News reported that Ricky Espaillat won the crucial No. 1 spot with an 8-6 victory. Four other players also secured wins: Derrin Lerner, Tomas Grygalis, Tyler Mahaffey, and Aidan Mahaffey.
The men's momentum continued in doubles, where they swept Villanova 4-0. But Temple derailed their strong weekend, handing Lafayette an 8-0 singles loss in their final invitational match. The sharp turnaround highlighted the challenge of competing against deeper rosters in back-to-back matches.
In Iowa high school tennis, Spencer and Bishop Heelan will clash in a regional final after advancing through semifinal action on September 30. The final is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, at a time and location to be confirmed. Both teams earned their spots through strong performances in the earlier rounds.
