Detroit Lions Prepare for Week 3 Matchup Amid Safety Injuries and Heavy Workloads

The Detroit Lions are preparing for their Week 3 game against the New York Jets with changes at several positions: right tackle Blake Miller and left guard Christian Mahogany returned to practice after missing the loss to Buffalo, while safety Thomas Harper remained absent amid injuries thinning the position group. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill missed Wednesday’s practice for a personal matter, but returned Thursday, and coach Dan Campbell said he was expected to be ready to play. Campbell also said the team is monitoring McNeill’s heavy workload—149 defensive snaps in two games—and hopes developing backups can help keep him and other key players fresher.
Safety Thomas Harper’s absence came as the Lions were also dealing with Avonte Maddox’s season-ending foot injury, further weakening the safety group.
Blake Miller’s return was especially significant after reserve tackle Larry Borom allowed 11 pressures and two sacks against Buffalo; Ben Bartch, who filled in for Christian Mahogany, gave up six pressures.
McNeill had played a career-high 91% of Detroit’s defensive snaps, totaling 11 more defensive downs than regular workhorse Aidan Hutchinson.
