SpaceX Targets September for Starship's First Orbital and Revenue-Generating Test Flight

Three of the 26 Starlink V3 satellites will carry cameras intended to photograph Starship’s heat shield after deployment, giving SpaceX imagery to assess and potentially improve the shield before the upper stage’s atmospheric return.
SpaceX said Flight 14 will be the first Starlink deployment designed to expand the company’s operational constellation with its larger V3 satellites; Starlink currently has more than 11,000 active spacecraft, though none are yet the V3 version.
SpaceX’s second-quarter filing classified all Starship launches to date as internal missions, while the company defines a customer launch as one in which an outside customer’s payload is the primary payload and the mission is designed around that customer’s requirements.
SpaceX’s Space segment reported $1.58 billion in first-half revenue but a $1.20 billion operating loss, alongside $2.23 billion in capital expenditures, as the company increased spending on Starship production, engineering, launches and testing.
SpaceX is targeting September 22, 2026, for Starship's 14th test flight, aiming to reach orbit for the first time with 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites aboard SpaceX. The 75-minute launch window opens at 7:15 a.m. Central Time from Starbase in South Texas, pending FAA regulatory approval. If successful, the mission would mark Starship's first revenue-generating flight and test critical orbital operations after engine problems during July's flight prompted hardware and software upgrades.
The upper stage will target an altitude of about 275 kilometers and complete roughly six orbits over 10 hours before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. Three of the 26 satellites will carry cameras to photograph Starship's heat shield after deployment, giving engineers imagery to assess shield performance before the vehicle's atmospheric return SpaceX. This data will help SpaceX improve the shield design for future missions.
SpaceX's Flight 13 in July suffered center-engine ice clogging on the Super Heavy booster during its terminal burn, causing a hard ocean splashdown SpaceX. Propellant lines accumulated ice crystals that prevented proper engine reignition. SpaceX modified Booster 21's propellant filters and relight software to prevent the same problem from recurring during Flight 14.
Each V3 satellite offers 1 terabit per second downlink capacity, roughly 10 times faster than current models SpaceX. This payload boost means one Starship launch will deliver the same network capacity as about 20 Falcon 9 launches. Starlink currently operates more than 11,000 active spacecraft, though none are yet the larger V3 version that Flight 14 will deploy.

Luxembourg-based Space Cargo Unlimited announced it has arranged Starship's first outside-customer mission for 2028, carrying a modular BentoBox laboratory and up to one metric ton of research and manufacturing payloads SpaceX. CEO Nicolas Gaume stated: "For more than thirty years, we've known that manufacturing in microgravity can create materials and products that simply cannot be produced on Earth. The challenge has never been the science. The challenge has been making it commercially accessible."
