TotalEnergies Approves Full-Field Development for Azerbaijan's Absheron Gas Project

TotalEnergies and partners SOCAR and XRG have made a final investment decision on the full-field development of Azerbaijan’s Absheron gas and condensate field in the Caspian Sea. The project is expected to begin production in 2029, lifting total capacity to 6 billion cubic meters of gas and 47,000 barrels of condensate per year. Gas will serve Azerbaijan’s domestic market and be exported to Türkiye through existing infrastructure. The development includes four subsea wells and a new, fully electrified onshore processing plant; TotalEnergies says the project is designed to limit emissions. The field’s first phase began production in 2023.
Absheron is located about 100 km southeast of Baku and is estimated to contain approximately 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas reserves.
TotalEnergies operates the project and holds a 35% stake; SOCAR also holds 35%, while XRG owns the remaining 30%.
The project’s Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions intensity is expected to be below 4 kg of CO₂-equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent.
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné described the development as a “low cost and low emissions project” intended to provide long-term additional gas supplies to domestic and international markets.
