Judge Rules Rihanna Shooting Suspect Mentally Competent for Trial

Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, was ruled competent to stand trial after psychiatric evaluations, allowing proceedings to resume in the case over a shooting at Rihanna’s Los Angeles-area home. She pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging attempted murder and multiple counts involving assault with a firearm and shooting at occupied or inhabited property. Prosecutors allege Ortiz fired at least 20 rounds toward the residence and a neighboring home on March 8, while Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, their children and others were on the property; no one was injured. The competency ruling addresses Ortiz’s ability to understand the case and assist her lawyer, not her guilt or overall mental health.
After her arrest, Ortiz reportedly denied intending to kill anyone, telling investigators: “I wasn’t attempting murder.”
Investigators said bullets struck the Airstream trailer and the exterior wall of a second-floor nursery where Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s children were with their nanny.
The grand jury indictment replaced the initial criminal complaint and upgraded the assault charges from assault with a semiautomatic firearm to assault with an assault weapon.
Police arrested Ortiz in a vehicle that reportedly contained a rifle, ammunition and a wig that prosecutors described as a disguise.
