Amazon Agreement Supports Planned $3 Billion Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant Upgrade

Amazon’s agreement was announced less than two months after Amazon Web Services withdrew a proposal for a data center campus on Constellation land beside Calvert Cliffs.
The plant’s existing operating licenses are set to expire in 2034 and 2036. Constellation says the agreement’s revenue certainty will support efforts to pursue subsequent license renewals.
The planned 190-megawatt uprate is classified as an extended power uprate, the largest category of uprate, and is expected to require substantial modifications to major plant equipment such as turbines, pumps, generators or transformers.
Constellation said the revenue certainty could also help advance development of new clean-energy power plants at the site, although it did not provide further details about those plans.
Amazon and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year deal securing 690 megawatts of electricity to power Amazon's regional operations. ANS The agreement backs a planned $3 billion upgrade at Maryland's Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant, including a 190-megawatt power increase that will raise the facility's total capacity to roughly 1,980 megawatts by 2030–2032.
The revenue from the long-term contract will help Constellation invest in equipment upgrades and pursue license renewals for the plant, whose current operating permits expire in 2034 and 2036. The Bay Net The deal comes two months after Amazon Web Services dropped plans for a data center campus on nearby Constellation property.
The planned 190-megawatt increase represents an extended power uprate—the largest category of nuclear upgrades. SOMD News This boost requires substantial modifications to major equipment like turbines, pumps, generators, and transformers. The upgrades will expand Calvert Cliffs' capacity by about 10 percent while the plant continues supplying power to the PJM grid rather than connecting directly to an Amazon data center.
Constellation says the 20-year agreement's guaranteed revenue will enable the company to pursue subsequent operating license renewals beyond 2036. Guru Focus The deal provides financial stability for a nuclear facility that has operated for decades but faces aging infrastructure and regulatory compliance costs. Officials at Calvert County are seeking more details about the agreement's local economic and environmental effects.
The power purchase agreement follows Amazon Web Services' withdrawal from a proposed data center campus on Constellation land adjacent to Calvert Cliffs just weeks earlier. WTOP Rather than building its own facility, Amazon now secures stable nuclear power through the long-term contract. Constellation hinted the revenue could also advance development of new clean-energy projects at the site, though specific details remain undisclosed.
