Gujarat Reorganizes Forest Division to Protect Asiatic Lions Returning After 143 Years

Gujarat has reorganized the Porbandar Forest Division to strengthen field administration and wildlife protection as Asiatic lions return to Barda after a 143-year absence, with the region being developed as an additional habitat for the species. The changes define responsibilities across forest ranges and beats, bring the Kutiyana and two social forestry ranges under Porbandar’s administration, and transfer 305.94 hectares covering four villages from Jamnagar’s RFW Bhatia Range to the Bhanvad Range. The overhaul also reallocates staff, equipment and supervisory duties to improve patrolling, monitoring and implementation of conservation programs.
The Porbandar Range is set at 6,840.84 hectares across 80 villages, while the Ranavav Range covers 13,051.25 hectares and 27 villages; both are divided into named beats to establish more specific local responsibilities.
The reorganized division is to have two Assistant Conservators of Forests: one overseeing Porbandar and the two social forestry ranges, and the other supervising Ranavav, Bhanvad, Kutiyana and the Mobile Squad.
A vacant Assistant Conservator of Forests post from Kevadia is being transferred to Porbandar to bring the division's ACF strength to two.
The resource changes include departmental vehicles, firearms, wireless communication sets and office equipment, alongside personnel and other field infrastructure.
The Forest and Environment Department said the restructuring would clarify range- and beat-level responsibilities; its order was issued on September 29, 2026, with guidance from Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia and Minister of State Pravin Mali.
