India Technology Sector Faces Massive Talent Gaps in Generative AI and Cloud

India’s technology sector faces a pronounced shortage of AI-ready workers, with TeamLease Digital reporting talent gaps of about 55–60% in cloud and 53% in generative AI, while only around 16% of IT professionals have AI skills. Demand for generative AI talent is expected to exceed one million roles by 2026; although 2 million professionals have received upskilling, only about 300,000 have advanced AI capabilities. The report says scarce skills are driving salary premiums toward AI-core and product-critical engineering jobs, while AI-support roles are absent from its list of 16 premium roles, pointing to a squeeze in entry-level work. Cybersecurity also faces a substantial, though narrowing, talent gap of 25–30%.
TeamLease Digital based its findings on an analysis of 37,000 technology and digital roles.
The report’s salary examples show a wide early-career pay spread across AI role types: a GenAI Developer earns Rs 11.2 lakh per annum at 0–2 years’ experience, compared with Rs 9.1 lakh for a Data Engineer and Rs 5.2 lakh for a Technical Support Engineer.
At senior levels, an ML Platform Architect with 15 years of experience earns Rs 94.8 lakh per annum, while the report gives Rs 75.6 lakh for a Platform Engineering Manager and Rs 38.4 lakh for a QA Automation Lead.
