UNICEF's Iconic Halloween Campaign Raises Nearly $200 Million for Children Worldwide

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is urging children and families to “Give Like a Kid Again” this Halloween by turning festive fun into support for children worldwide. Launched in 1950 with $17 collected by children helping peers recovering from World War II, the campaign has raised nearly $200 million and become a longstanding youth-engagement tradition. Donations support UNICEF programs in more than 190 countries and territories and help deliver emergency supplies—including therapeutic food, medicine, blankets and safe water—to children affected by conflict, disasters and disease. The campaign highlights how small contributions can make a difference, including a $5 donation to provide a child with safe water for a year.
The campaign began when children collected spare change in milk cartons in 1950, a detail that adds context to the origin story behind the first $17 raised.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF describes itself as the longest-running youth engagement campaign in the United States.
UNICEF USA chief marketing officer Shelley Diamond said the campaign shows children “you are never too young to make a difference,” and described “Give Like a Kid Again” as passing that belief to the next generation.
The campaign’s iconic orange collection box is presented as a reminder that small acts of generosity can create lasting change.
