NASA Curiosity rover discovers unusual shallow pits on Mars holding unique layers.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered unusual broad, shallow pits in the Valle Grande area of Mount Sharp inside Mars’ Gale Crater. Deputy principal investigator Michelle Minitti said the formations differ from previously observed Martian pits because they lack obvious objects that may have created them. Curiosity used MAHLI, Mastcam, ChemCam and APXS to photograph, model and analyze the features, which are about 1 centimeter across and appear to contain layers with compositions distinct from the surrounding bedrock. Scientists are studying whether the pits reflect unusual geological processes or changes in the ancient conditions under which the Mount Sharp rocks formed.
Michelle Minitti said that “after Curiosity’s 14 years on the surface, Mars continues to surprise,” underscoring the rover’s long operational record and the unexpected nature of the discovery.
Curiosity created the composite image of the pits on Aug. 19, 2026, at 07:59:21 UTC, providing a precise observation date and time for the feature.
The surrounding “typical” bedrock contained complex packages of layers whose texture and structure changed over short vertical distances, while the analyzed layers were described as gray, rough and resistant.
Scientists said the closely spaced changes in the rocks might record shifts in depositional conditions during the formation of Mount Sharp’s stratigraphy.
