Schools Across the Country Celebrate Annual Homecoming Traditions With Parades and Football

Homecoming celebrations included parades, football games and court traditions at schools in Michigan, Florida, Colorado and North Carolina, as well as at Southern University and Ferris State. At Waverly High School, Brooke-lynn Burleson was crowned queen; Genesee County schools Carman-Ainsworth, Grand Blanc, Flushing and Kearsley held parades and Friday-night games, with Carman-Ainsworth falling behind Bay City Western after early turnovers. Sebastian River High School held a Sept. 29 parade, and its game against Heritage was scheduled for Oct. 2; North Carolina Wesleyan's week included sports, tailgating and a chili cookoff, while Southern students competed in the music game show “Aux Cord Wars.” Fairview defeated Fossil Ridge 56-20 on Sept. 25, with junior Steven Brown scoring four touchdowns. Ferris State, riding a 33-game winning streak and welcoming back several players from injury, was set to host Kentucky Christian for its homecoming game.
Sebastian River’s Sept. 29 parade traveled along Indian River Drive and ended at Riverview Park, featuring Sebastian Elementary School of the Arts cheerleaders and dance team, plus floats representing the high school’s athletic teams, JROTC and marching band.
North Carolina Wesleyan’s homecoming schedule included a 10 a.m. volleyball match against Greensboro and an eighth annual chili cookoff before the noon football game against LaGrange; the game’s tickets were $5 for adults, $3 for ages 12–18 and free for children under 12.
At Southern’s “Aux Cord Wars,” students competed by choosing music to energize the crowd, with winners receiving cash and prizes.
Fairview’s win came after close losses to ThunderRidge and Ralston Valley. Coach Tom McCartney said the team needed to take ownership, fix its mistakes and make the plays required to beat strong opponents.
Fairview opened the game with a 76-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ki Ellison to Cashin Fejer, followed on the next drive by Steven Brown’s 5-yard rushing score.
