New York Attorney General Appointed Special Prosecutor in Cornell Sexual Assault Case

Tompkins County DA's office declined to review additional material gathered by university police regarding a 'gang rape' case from a then-20-year-old Cornell student, Jane Doe, before declining to press charges. The Tompkins county district attorney's office only reviewed six-page summary of the woman's statements. The state Attorney General, Letitia James, is leading an investigation into the case. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul accused the district attorney of not doing the "bare minimum" and removed him from the case and named New York Attorney General LetitiaJames as special prosecutor. The university supports the appointment of the special prosecutor and efforts to change New York State's rape law.
