White House launches America.gov, an AI-powered portal simplifying federal website searches.

The White House launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal intended to make information across roughly 29,000 federal websites easier to find through plain-language questions. Powered by Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok, it currently provides answers and links to official resources; completing applications and tracking services are planned for later phases, with broader transactional features targeted by 2027. An executive order directs agencies to integrate eligible public-facing services, while excluding tax filing and some national-security functions and requiring that the site not create a centralized federal record system. Early testing exposed inconsistencies: the chatbot said official evidence shows no widespread fraud changed the 2020 election result, then reportedly began declining political questions during Trump’s launch remarks; it also produced an apparent rewrite of Minecraft’s End Poem. The rollout comes amid wider debate over AI safety and regulation, even as the administration promotes the technology and seeks closer government-industry cooperation.
The portal draws on a reported 800 million pages of government information, and White House Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia described its source as “one official source of truth.”
At launch, basic use did not require a login, and the site was described as free and ad-free; Login.gov authentication was slated for later updates.
In another early answer beyond its response about the 2020 election, the chatbot referred to the Pentagon as the headquarters of the Department of Defense, despite Trump’s rebranding of the department as the Department of War.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz demonstrated how the portal could help with prescription ordering and other services.
The launch coincided with a White House meeting on AI regulation involving Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and executives including OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Google’s Sundar Pichai and Palantir’s Alex Karp.
