Election Commission Eases Voter Verification and Extends Deadlines for Major Regions

The Election Commission said its decisions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) were unanimous and that the Supreme Court had upheld the exercise, amid reports of disagreements among commissioners. To ease voter verification, Booth Level Officers will generally collect documents at home from electors flagged for unmapped records or discrepancies; in-person hearings will be reserved for exceptional cases, preferably held online, and an adult family member may represent an elector. The Commission also reaffirmed that people omitted from the rolls, including first-time voters, can seek inclusion through continuous updates, and directed officials to conduct enrolment drives. It said the Form 6 declaration was valid and clarified that a letter to the Cabinet Secretary concerned an officer’s functioning, not Commission policy; it also ordered a review of the ECINET portal and extended some enrolment deadlines.
