Pete Hegseth defends Pentagon military overhaul amid severe criticism from lawmakers

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has claimed that he has transformed the U.S. military, promising to reduce a bloated flag-officer corps and establish a more merit-based force. However, this has been met with criticism due to his use of promotion boards to end the careers of some senior officers, many of whom were Black or female officers with excellent service records. Sen. Jack Reed, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, accused Hegsetsh of taking "reckless, partisan actions" that have damaged the military. In his speech, Hegsettingh defended his policies and claimed that retention and recruitment among women and minorities has increased. He also announced new initiatives including autonomous weapons, technological innovation, base construction and domestic production of essential military supplies.
