Indian Railways Announces Extensive Special Train Services for Upcoming Festivals

Indian rail operators are adding or extending services to handle travel demand during the Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath festival period. Central Railway plans 216 trips by seven on-demand special trains from Pune Division, while East Central Railway has extended three special services through November. A Vande Bharat sleeper service between New Delhi and Varanasi via Prayagraj and Kanpur is also being planned, alongside 50 trips of a reserved Varanasi–Delhi special; the Vande Bharat schedule was not yet finalized in the report. Other announced measures include additional Kolkata Metro services on selected October weekends and a weekly Kurla LTT–Thiruvananthapuram North special via the Konkan route.

The proposed Vande Bharat sleeper is reported to have about 823 berths across 11 third-AC coaches, four second-AC coaches and one first-AC coach. Its planned journey time is about 8 hours and 10 minutes, with an initial operating speed of 130 km/h that could later rise to 160 km/h.

The weekly Kurla LTT–Thiruvananthapuram North special is slated to run from October 15 to November 21, via Kottayam on the Konkan route.
