Stockholm Nobel Week Opens With Highly Anticipated Medicine Prize Announcement

The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements begin October 5 in Stockholm with the Physiology or Medicine award, followed by Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace through October 9; the Economics prize will be announced October 12. The medicine prize recognizes discoveries that advance understanding of the human body and disease. Last year’s award went to Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for work on peripheral immune tolerance, which helps explain how the body prevents the immune system from attacking healthy tissue. Each prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, and the laureates will receive their awards at ceremonies in December.
The medicine prize announcement is scheduled to take place at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, at 11:30 CEST at the earliest.
The 2025 laureates’ findings were described as important for understanding autoimmune diseases including Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Shimon Sakaguchi discovered regulatory T cells, which help prevent harmful immune reactions; Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell later identified the role of the FOXP3 gene in those cells and linked it to serious autoimmune disease.
The medicine prize was first awarded in 1901; through 2025, 116 prizes had been awarded to 232 individuals, and a prize can be shared by up to three people.
The December 10 award ceremonies are held in Oslo for the Peace Prize and in Stockholm for the other prizes.
