Hong Kong Belt and Road Summit Draws Thousands of Global Business Leaders

Hong Kong’s merchandise trade with Belt and Road partner economies increased nearly 17% in the previous year to approximately US$323 billion. Nearly 1,500 companies from those economies have established offices in Hong Kong, while more than 100 are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee described the initiative as “not a map of the past, but a shared blueprint for the future,” saying Hong Kong is where that future can be realized.
Thirty-two memoranda of understanding and agreements were signed on the summit’s first day, covering finance, professional services and construction.
The first-day agreements involved organizations from the Chinese mainland, Australia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar and Uzbekistan, illustrating the summit’s broad geographic reach.
The opening session featured addresses by Uzbekistan Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, Uruguay Vice President Carolina Cosse and Laos Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, along with remarks from China’s vice commerce minister Yan Dong and State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission Vice Chairman Li Zhen.
