Pennsylvania Reports Fifth Measles Associated Death As Statewide Outbreak Nears 1000 Cases

Pennsylvania health officials have reported the state's fifth measles-associated death of 2026, as the statewide outbreak has grown to 943 confirmed cases in 39 counties. The unvaccinated Lancaster County resident, who tested positive for measles, died. The latest state update includes 40 new positive cases since Sunday, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 176. The outbreak has led to a sharp increase in demand for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, with providers administering over 53,000 doses in September, more than double the typical monthly amount of about 25,000. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% lifetime protection against measles.
