WNBA Transgender Athlete Debate
WNBA Coach Cheryl Reeve Wears Pro-Trans Shirt During Game Amidst Athlete Inclusion Debate
Anonymous
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a "Trans Kids Belong" T-shirt during a game against the Indiana Fever, a direct response to comments made by Fever guard Sophie Cunningham about keeping transgender athletes out of girls' sports, according to News3LV.
The moment turned a regular-season WNBA matchup into a flashpoint in one of the most heated debates in American sports. Cunningham had defended her stance in a recent ESPN interview, saying she stands by her belief in protecting girls in sports. Advocate Riley Gaines showed up to the game holding a sign that read "Sophie, thank you — girl mom," according to WGME.
Cunningham Stands Firm on Transgender Athlete Remarks
Cunningham had previously made public statements opposing transgender athletes competing in women's sports. She doubled down on those views in an ESPN interview. She said she believes girls deserve protection in their sports. Her comments drew both praise from conservatives and backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates, according to KOMO News.
The Indiana Fever guard did not back down. She framed her position as being about fairness and safety for biological girls. Her remarks set off a chain reaction that spilled directly onto the court in the form of Reeve's shirt, according to WACH.
Reeve's T-Shirt Sends a Clear Message on the Sideline
Reeve wore the pro-trans shirt in plain view during the Lynx-Fever game. The shirt read "Trans Kids Belong." Coaches and players have used clothing and pregame gestures to take political stances before, but this moment was unusually direct — timed to respond to a fellow WNBA figure, according to KMPH.
Reeve did not appear to make a verbal statement during the game about her shirt. But the image was widely shared online and quickly went viral. The WNBA has long been one of the most vocal pro-LGBTQ+ leagues in professional sports, according to FOX11.
Riley Gaines Attends the Game, Backs Cunningham Publicly
Riley Gaines, a former competitive swimmer turned outspoken critic of transgender inclusion in women's sports, attended the Lynx-Fever game. She held up a sign that read "Sophie, thank you — girl mom." The gesture was a show of public support for Cunningham, according to KTUL.
Gaines has been one of the most visible faces in the fight to keep biological men out of women's sports. Her presence at the game signaled that the debate had moved well beyond social media. It was now playing out in person, inside a WNBA arena, according to WGME.
WNBA Becomes a Battleground for Broader Culture War
The WNBA has become a frequent stage for social and political statements. Players and coaches have spoken out on issues ranging from racial justice to LGBTQ+ rights. The league has encouraged that activism. But this week, two sides of a national debate came face to face on the same court, according to WACH.
Cunningham's remarks and Reeve's shirt show how divided the sports world remains on the issue of transgender athletes. There is no sign either side plans to stay quiet. Fans, players, coaches, and outside advocates are all now part of the conversation, whether the league wants them to be or not, according to News3LV.
