Swachhata Campaign Mobilizes Communities Across Regions for Cleanliness and Tree-Planting Drives

The Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign, running from September 17 to October 2, has brought cleanliness drives and sanitation-awareness activities to communities, schools and public spaces across several regions. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, programs span all nine blocks and include community beach cleanups, waste-segregation education and student activities; six coastal drives drew about 600 participants and collected roughly two metric tons of waste. Northeast Frontier Railway is organizing riverbank and station cleanups, maintaining water facilities and holding school programs on hygiene and responsible waste disposal, with railway staff, sanitation workers, students and passengers taking part. In Aghunato, local officials held awareness meetings and encouraged proper waste disposal, while residents also raised concerns about the lack of public toilets and unauthorized collections from shopkeepers.
Aghunato Town Council chairman Ahokhe Achumi said the council would provide four dustbins to each colony once the government supplies them, and urged residents to use designated bins for dry and wet waste.
Alongside the island campaign, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands held an “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” tree-planting drive at a newly developed eco-friendly park, with dignitaries, PRI representatives and local residents taking part.
On Day 7 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, more than 450 people participated in activities spanning Safai Mitra welfare, public-space improvement, community participation and school outreach; programmes also included four-way waste-segregation awareness and student quizzes.
Northeast Frontier Railway’s school outreach includes art competitions and quizzes on Swachhata and Jal Sanchay, as well as Swachhata pledges at stations.
