Police Clash With Anti-Migrant Protesters in Gosport Following Channel Boat Rescue

Anti-migrant protesters clashed with police in Gosport, Hampshire, on Wednesday as rescue teams brought nearly 150 migrants ashore after a small boat crossing of the English Channel. The Guardian reported that demonstrators gathered and chanted anti-immigration slogans, blocking police vehicles as the migrants arrived at Haslar Marina. The incident marks the second time protesters have targeted the coastal town over migrant arrivals.
The rescued migrants will be transported to short-term holding facilities in Kent for health, security, and biometric checks, according to the Home Office. This year's provisional total for Channel crossings stands at 19,451 — down 43% compared to the same period last year and 23% below 2024 figures.
Around 150 anti-migration protesters gathered near Haslar Marina as RNLI boats delivered the rescued migrants Wednesday. UK Head Topics reported that demonstrators blocked police vehicles and chanted anti-immigration slogans. Police deployed additional officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary to manage the crowd and ensure order during the arrival.
The small boat was escorted by French rescue vessels before being met by the RNLI in English waters, Evening Standard reported. Two RNLI boats transported the migrants safely to shore in Gosport. The rescue operation involved multiple agencies coordinating across the Channel to bring the vessel and its occupants to safety.
Wednesday's clash was the second time anti-migration protesters have targeted Gosport over migrant arrivals. Rumors of people disembarking in the town have repeatedly drawn demonstrators to the area. The repeated incidents highlight growing tension in some UK coastal communities regarding migrant arrivals and rescue operations.
The 149 migrants rescued Wednesday are part of a downward trend in Channel crossings. The provisional 2025 total of 19,451 represents a 43% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. Crossings are also running 23% below the figure from this stage last year, suggesting stricter enforcement or fewer migrants attempting the dangerous journey.
