Essar Announces $18 Billion Integrated Steel and Mining Project in the United States

Essar Group, through its U.S. subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, plans to invest about $18 billion in an integrated steel project centered on a $15 billion Iowa plant, announced by President Donald Trump. The facility is designed to produce up to 10 million tonnes of steel annually, with first production targeted for 2030. The plan also includes about $3 billion for a new Minnesota iron ore mine, linking domestic mining to steel production. The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and roughly 2,000 permanent manufacturing and mining jobs.
The Iowa plant’s first phase is expected to produce 7.5 million tonnes of steel annually, with first production targeted for 2030.
The Minnesota mine would be the first new iron ore mine built in the United States in about 50 years.
The estimated permanent jobs break down into roughly 1,750 manufacturing roles in Iowa and 350 mining jobs in Minnesota.
Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia described the investment as “a true homecoming,” saying he was born in India, studied in the United States and had spent half his life there.
