Global Water Outages
Global Water Infrastructure Failures Cause Supply Outages Across Multiple Regions
Anonymous
A burst water main in West Molesey disrupted water supplies to homes across south London and Surrey; Thames Water said the number affected fell from as many as 15,000 to about 6,000 as engineers worked on repairs. In Modbury, Devon, a separate burst main left hundreds of households with low pressure or no water and forced a primary school and preschool to close, with repairs expected to take four to five hours. In Ypsilanti, Michigan, an electrical failure briefly halted a final filtration step at a water facility; operations resumed that evening, and officials said the water retained ultraviolet disinfection and would be tested. In Karachi, a power failure stopped pumping at the Pipri station for about four and a half hours, causing a reported shortfall of roughly 35 million gallons per day; supply returned to normal after electricity was restored.
Key Points
1
Esher and Walton MP Monica Harding called for an urgent response to restore supplies and protect vulnerable communities, and said the cause should be investigated once water was flowing again. She raised concerns that decades of infrastructure underinvestment and poor regulation might be contributing to incidents like this.
2
In Ypsilanti, workers opened a bypass gate to prevent water from spilling and damaging other equipment, sending water directly into the Lower Rouge River while filtration was paused. The discharge was to be tested against the authority’s permit standards.
3
The West Molesey outage affected customers in 18 listed postcode areas, from CR4 and KT postcodes to SW and TW districts.
