BMW opens U.S. reservations for the electric i3 sedan starting at $61,500.

BMW has opened U.S. reservations for the 2027 i3 50 xDrive, its first fully electric 3 Series, ahead of deliveries beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The sedan starts at $61,500, plus a $1,350 destination charge, and requires a refundable $1,000 reservation deposit. BMW estimates 446 to 468 miles of range using its own tests under EPA procedures; the figure is preliminary, not an EPA-certified rating, but would place the i3 among the longest-range electric vehicles advertised in the U.S. Its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces 463 horsepower, while an 800-volt architecture supports fast charging that BMW says can add up to 208 miles in 10 minutes. The i3 also features a NACS charging port, bidirectional charging and a windshield-projected display. BMW is investing about €2 billion in German production for the new 3 Series, including a battery plant expected to supply i3 batteries starting in 2026.
BMW says the i3’s sixth-generation eDrive system pairs a 322-hp rear motor with a 165-hp front motor. Compared with its Gen5 technology, BMW claims Gen6 cuts motor energy losses by 40%, cost by 20% and weight by 10%, while increasing range by 30% and charging speed by 30%.
BMW’s German production investment includes about €1 billion for the Irlbach-Straßkirchen battery plant, which is scheduled to begin supplying i3 batteries in October 2026.
If its preliminary 468-mile estimate holds, the i3 would rank fourth among U.S. EVs by advertised range, behind the Lucid Air, Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV; among sedans, only the Lucid would have a higher figure.
The i3’s cabin pairs its windshield display with a 17.9-inch central infotainment screen running BMW Operating System X; buyers can also add an optional BMW 3D head-up display.
