Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Three High Court Chief Justices for Appointment

India’s Supreme Court Collegium has recommended three high court chief justices for appointment to the Supreme Court: Sunita Agarwal of Gujarat, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya of Delhi, and Aparesh Kumar Singh of Telangana. The recommendations were made at a collegium meeting on September 28, 2026, and will proceed through the established appointment process. Agarwal, a former Allahabad High Court judge, has led the Gujarat High Court since 2023 and would be eligible to serve on the Supreme Court until her retirement in April 2031.
The Collegium recommending the appointments comprised the Chief Justice of India and Justices Vikram Nath, B. V. Nagarathna, M. M. Sundresh and P. S. Narasimha.
Sunita Agarwal graduated in law from Awadh University in 1989 and entered the legal profession in December 1990.
Agarwal was appointed as a judge in November 2011, before becoming Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
