MongoDB Appoints Interim Chief Executive as Stock Plummets Following Sudden Departure for Meta

MongoDB CEO and President Chirantan “CJ” Desai stepped down effective immediately to become Meta’s newly created chief enterprise platform officer, reporting to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He will lead Meta’s enterprise platform, initially bringing tools including Muse Agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code to businesses and developers; Desai had held MongoDB’s top role since November 2025. MongoDB shares fell sharply after the announcement, with reports putting the decline at roughly 14% to 25% in premarket or early trading. The company named former CEO Dev Ittycheria interim president and CEO and began searching for a permanent successor. MongoDB reaffirmed its third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2027 financial guidance and was preparing to discuss its strategy and opportunities at an Investor Day.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Desai as an enterprise leader with experience in AI, infrastructure, business applications and security; before MongoDB, Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and COO.
Zuckerberg said Meta would build on its advanced models, agents, large-scale infrastructure and experience working with businesses as it develops the enterprise platform.
Meta’s enterprise push comes amid investor pressure for returns on its substantial AI spending; CNBC also reported that Meta’s Muse personal AI assistant had become the leading free iOS app, ahead of ChatGPT.
MongoDB had already lost nearly a quarter of its market value in 2026 before the reported share drop following Desai’s departure.
