Epsilon Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight with dark skies offering stunning shooting-star views

The September Epsilon Perseid meteor shower, set to peak on Sept. 9 and early morning hours of Sept. 10, could bring an "epic" shooting-star display due to this year's darker-than-usual skies and a September new moon, according to astronomers. The best telescope for viewing the meteor shower is a travel telescope with a 70mm aperture for the clearest views of the moon, planets, meteor showers, and other celestial displays. The Epsilon Perid meteor showers will be active now through Sept. 21, with its peak expected to occur in the late-night hours of September 9 and into the dawn on Sept., 10. The International Meteor Organization's 2026 meteor calendar predicts that the maximum will occur around 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., with up to five meteors per hour and the best visibility in the northern hemisphere.
