Milwaukee Expected to Host G20 Trade Ministers for Global Supply Chain Discussions

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will host G20 trade ministers in Milwaukee from September 29 to October 1, with India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal among the participants. Discussions are expected to cover forced labor in global supply chains, possible updates to the World Trade Organization’s Most-Favored-Nation principle, the use of food trade as a weapon, and excess industrial capacity and production. The agenda also includes a meeting on steel overcapacity and a tour of Rockwell Automation, where officials plan to meet workers and industry leaders. The gathering comes amid shifting U.S. tariff policies and pressure on supply chains.
The MFN principle generally requires a WTO member to extend to other members the same trade advantage it grants to one member, subject to WTO exceptions. The USTR release did not specify what changes the United States might propose.
The meeting takes place after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act; the articles describe addressing excess capacity and production as tariff tools used by the United States afterward.
Beyond the welcome reception, the programme includes a welcome dinner hosted by the USTR and U.S. Department of Agriculture, and a closing reception at the Harley-Davidson Museum.
The articles cite the extended Iran war as another challenge facing the G20 trade ministers, alongside changing U.S. tariff policies and supply-chain pressures.
