UK Regulator Introduces Strict Safeguards and Time Limits for New Gaming Machines

Players on new machines must choose their own limits or accept defaults: personal limits can be set up to 60 minutes and £450 in net losses, while defaults are capped at 20 minutes and £150.
The scope extends beyond Category B: the phased standards are described as applying to new Category A, B and certain Category C machines, with implementation dates running from March 2027 through October 2028.
Machines must send real-time alerts to staff when players reach or change time or loss limits, although the alerts do not require staff to intervene immediately. To limit alert fatigue, no alert is required when a player reaches the first two default time thresholds.
Players can hide the displayed session time and net position, but only after the information has been visible for at least 10 seconds.
The reforms followed a 2025 consultation that received 1,065 responses; the Commission said it adjusted proposals in response to feedback and aimed to balance consumer benefits against implementation costs.
The UK Gambling Commission is rolling out sweeping new safeguards for land-based gaming machines, starting March 2027. Players will be required to set their own time and loss limits—or accept built-in defaults—before playing new machines, with mandatory breaks and real-time loss tracking Sportsboom. The phased rollout extends through October 2028, marking the most significant overhaul of arcade gaming rules in years.
The new rules apply to new Category A, B, and certain Category C machines. Players can set personal limits up to 60 minutes of play or £450 in net losses, but default caps are stricter at 20 minutes and £150 Sportsboom. Machines must also display session time and net wins or losses, and staff will receive real-time alerts when limits are reached.
Starting June 30, 2027, all new gaming machines will force players to choose limits before they start playing. If players don't set their own, the machine assigns defaults: 20 minutes and £150 in losses Sportsboom. Players who want looser limits can set personal ones up to 60 minutes or £450 in net losses.
The machine tracks everything in real time. Session time and net position appear on screen, though players can hide them after 10 seconds. Mandatory breaks kick in when limits are reached, and the machine displays safer-gambling information Sportsboom. Rapid-play functions are now banned to slow down the game.
Hundreds of thousands of gaming machines already installed in UK arcades and pubs won't need to be upgraded. The Gambling Commission exempted existing machines from the new technical standards because retrofitting them would cost operators far too much money Sportsboom. Only new machines purchased from 2027 onward must meet the stricter rules.
This creates a two-tier system where older machines can operate under looser rules. However, the Commission said the exemption balances consumer protection with the practical costs facing businesses Sportsboom. The decision came after a 2025 consultation that received 1,065 responses from the industry and public.
When a player hits or changes their time or loss limit, the machine sends a real-time alert to staff working the venue Sportsboom. Staff aren't required to jump in immediately, but they know what's happening. To prevent alert fatigue, machines won't alert staff for the first two default time thresholds.
The rules also crack down on addictive game features. Rapid-play buttons are gone, and machines cannot celebrate wins smaller than the original stake Sportsboom. The Commission defines a session by actual gameplay time, not deposits or menu navigation, so breaks trigger during play rather than before it starts.
The rollout isn't happening all at once. New rules begin in March 2027, with most technical standards taking effect June 30, 2027 Sportsboom. Some measures extend further, with final implementation deadlines reaching October 2028. This phased approach gives operators time to adapt without shocking the market.
