World Tourism Day Highlights AI and Digital Infrastructure Transforming Global Travel

World Tourism Day has highlighted tourism’s potential to support jobs, cultural heritage and sustainable community development as destinations adopt digital tools and AI. India launched the National Digital Tourism Stack with ONDC, shared infrastructure covering more than 23,000 experiences and homestays, with over 1,000 experiences already transacting on the network. In Prayagraj, tourism officials and industry representatives discussed using AI, social media and digital platforms to promote the city’s heritage and improve visitor services. GCC-Stat said regional visitor numbers and tourism revenues are rising and projected tourism would contribute about $365.7 billion to GCC GDP and support 5.8 million jobs by 2035. The Caribbean Tourism Organization urged technology strategies rooted in local communities and cultural values, saying innovation should benefit residents and destinations as well as visitors.
India’s National Digital Tourism Stack is designed as shared infrastructure rather than a standalone booking portal. It includes a “list-once” model for providers, and the more than 1,000 experiences already transacting include 170 ASI monuments and 29 museums.
GCC-Stat reported that more than 20 million tourists travelled between GCC countries in 2025, up 3.6% from 2024, while total arrivals reached about 75.7 million. Tourism revenues rose 9.7% to about $131.9 billion, and the region had around 12,400 hotel establishments.
The Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Reimagine Plan 2025–2027 is built around six pillars: advocacy, market competitiveness, tourism intelligence, sustainable and regenerative tourism, people development, and operational excellence.
At Prayagraj’s World Tourism Day panel, chief guest Justice Manju Rani Chauhan called for the city’s religious, spiritual, historical and cultural heritage to be showcased through digital platforms, social media and innovative promotion. The event also recognised contributions to Star Classification, Youth Tourism Clubs, and the preservation and promotion of local culture and folk artists.
