Gujarat plans massive rooftop solar expansion across fifteen thousand government buildings with a huge budget.

Gujarat plans to install rooftop solar systems on 15,000 additional government buildings in 2026–27, adding about 65 megawatts of capacity. By March 2026, the program had equipped 6,014 buildings with 95 MW of solar capacity, including 17.1 MW added across 1,377 buildings during 2025–26. The state has budgeted ₹314 crore for the expansion, which aims to reduce reliance on conventional electricity, lower government power costs and curb pollution. Gujarat has also introduced an internet-connected monitoring system to track renewable-energy installations on government buildings.
The programme provides 100% capital-cost support for rooftop solar installations on Gujarat government buildings.
Of the ₹314 crore allocated for 2026–27, ₹278 crore is for general government buildings, ₹3 crore for buildings under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, and ₹33 crore for Tribal Development Department buildings.
The new monitoring system uses smart meters, sensors and IoT gateways, communicating over GPRS, 4G and Ethernet networks.
The Gujarat Energy Development Agency has run the rooftop-solar programme under the Climate Change Department since 2011–12.
