UN Advocates Warn That Global Education Crisis Threatens 500 Million Children

At the U.N.’s annual gathering, advocates warned that more than 500 million children urgently need education amid conflict, displacement and climate shocks. UN education envoy Gordon Brown said 273 million children are out of school and another 270 million attend school but lack basic reading, writing and math skills. Education Cannot Wait director Maysa Jalbout described an overcrowded, sweltering classroom in Sudan where a displaced teenager remained determined to learn, while hundreds of other children could not get inside. The Global Partnership for Education reported mobilizing $3.5 billion for education systems in more than 90 lower-income countries, and Education Cannot Wait announced $3 million in emergency aid for children in Gaza and the West Bank.
