Apple CEO John Ternus Takes Hands-On Role Overseeing Company Design Teams

Ternus reportedly visits Apple’s design studio several times a week, sometimes more than once in a day—a marked change from Tim Cook, who Bloomberg says typically visited for about an hour once a month at most.
Ternus has said he should focus on where he can generate the most value for Apple while being himself as CEO; financial strategy and supply-chain responsibilities are being handled by CFO Kevan Parekh and COO Sabih Khan.
Apple gave industrial-design lead Molly Anderson and human-interface lead Steve Lemay prominent visibility at the iPhone Duo launch, including a joint video introduction by the two designers.
The reported departures included Alan Dye’s move to Meta, while Apple’s design talent was also recruited by LoveFrom and OpenAI; Apple responded in part by promoting junior designers and bringing in outside hires.
Apple CEO John Ternus is now spending multiple days a week inside the company's design studio, making hands-on decisions about product design without holding a formal chief design officer title. Mac Observer reports Ternus visits the studio several times weekly — sometimes more than once daily — a sharp contrast to Tim Cook, who typically spent about an hour there once a month. This shift marks Apple's first major design leadership overhaul since legendary designer Jony Ive departed in 2019.
Apple's industrial design and human interface teams now report directly to Ternus instead of operating under separate leadership. Mac Observer says this arrangement effectively makes Ternus the company's top design decision-maker. Molly Anderson leads industrial design and Steve Lemay oversees human interface design, but both now work closely with Ternus on all major product choices.
The restructuring reflects Apple's effort to give design a stronger voice at the CEO level after years without unified oversight. FirstPost notes Ternus has chosen to focus on design and product engineering rather than handling financial strategy and operations — duties now split between CFO Kevan Parekh and COO Sabih Khan.
Ternus's weekly studio presence represents a dramatic shift in how Apple's CEO engages with design. Mac Observer reports that Cook typically visited the design studio for about one hour per month, whereas Ternus now appears several times each week. On some days, he visits more than once. This intensity signals Ternus views design as central to his role.
Apple has faced significant design departures in recent years. Alan Dye, a veteran designer, moved to Meta. Meanwhile, LoveFrom and OpenAI recruited other Apple design talent away. Northeast Times reports Ternus's hands-on involvement comes as Apple rebuilds its design staff through promotions and new hires from outside the company.
The company has not launched a formal search for an external chief design officer, suggesting leadership believes Ternus can provide the creative oversight Jony Ive once did. Mac Observer notes that Ternus and his design leads gave Molly Anderson and Steve Lemay prominent visibility during the iPhone Duo launch, including a joint video introduction from both designers.
