Emerson to Provide Automation Technology for Europe's First Greenfield SAF Plant

Emerson will provide automation technology for SkyNRG’s sustainable aviation fuel plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands, under a contract with engineering firm Technip Energies. The facility, described as Europe’s first dedicated greenfield SAF plant, is under construction and is expected to begin operations in 2028 with annual production of about 100,000 tonnes from residual fats and greases. Its drop-in fuel can be blended with conventional jet fuel without modifications to aircraft, engines or fueling infrastructure. Emerson’s DeltaV integrated control and safety system will provide process control, safety shutdown and fire-and-gas detection, while related software will support plant maintenance and operations. The project is intended to help the Netherlands meet the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation requirements, which call for SAF to comprise 2% of fuel supplied at EU airports from 2025 and 70% by 2050.
The automation architecture will cover the plant’s hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) SAF process, an advanced feedstock pre-treatment unit and an on-site hydrogen plant.
Emerson’s AMS Device Manager plant software will be deployed to support maintenance activities at the facility.
SkyNRG site director Bart Rosendaal said the partnership with Technip Energies and Emerson is intended to deliver “a safe, reliable and future-ready plant from day one.”
The greenfield facility is being designed as a “born digital” plant, with advanced automation installed from the outset to support efficient, reliable and safe operations and reduce risks associated with a first-of-its-kind project.
The companies did not disclose financial terms for Emerson’s contract.
