Alan Hale, Astronomer Who Discovered Historic Comet Hale-Bopp, Dies at 68

Alan Hale, the astronomer who co-discovered the most-viewed comet in human history, died on June 6, 2026, at his home in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. He was 68. Island Packet reported that Hale spotted what became Comet Hale-Bopp from his driveway just after midnight on July 23, 1995, setting off one of the greatest sky-watching events of the 20th century.
Hale-Bopp remained visible to the naked eye for 18 months — shattering the previous record of nine months — and drew millions of people outside to look up. According to EarthSky, the comet peaked at a magnitude of -0.8 in March 1997, brighter than every star in the night sky except Sirius.
Hale was not on a research telescope when he made his discovery. He had a doctorate in astronomy from New Mexico State University and was running a small science education nonprofit. That night, he was in his driveway in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, scanning the sky around the globular cluster M70 in the constellation Sagittarius. He spotted a fuzzy object that did not belong on his star charts.
Hale spent three hours tracking the object before sending an email to the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams in Cambridge, Massachusetts. By the next day, experts confirmed it was a new comet. It was officially designated C/1995 O1. According to Sky & Telescope, at the moment of discovery it sat 7.2 AU from the Sun — well beyond Jupiter's orbit — yet was already bright enough to spot at magnitude 10.5, hinting at its enormous size.
On that same night, Thomas Bopp, a construction materials manager from Arizona, spotted the same object at a "star party" with friends. He was using a borrowed telescope. Under International Astronomical Union rules, both men got credit. The comet was named Hale-Bopp after them both. Bopp died in 2018. Hale later described him as a "warm and congenial fellow" who was a natural partner during their joint public appearances.
The dual discovery highlighted a key truth in modern astronomy: a PhD-holding professional and a true amateur with a borrowed scope could spot the same thing on the same night. By April 1, 1997, Comet Hale-Bopp reached perihelion — its closest point to the Sun. Its nucleus measured an estimated 40 to 60 kilometers across, far larger than Halley's Comet at about 15 kilometers. Those twin factors made it extraordinarily bright and gave it staying power in the sky that no modern comet had matched. Hale called it one of the brightest comets ever seen from Earth.
The comet's fame came with a dark shadow. In March 1997, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed mass suicide, believing a spacecraft was trailing the comet. Hale responded bluntly. "Science education failed these people," he said at the time, arguing that better scientific literacy could have prevented the tragedy. Critics pushed back, saying the cult's actions stemmed from deep psychological distress, not ignorance of astronomy.
Hale did not rest on his discovery. He wrote a book, "Everybody's Comet: A Layperson's Guide to Hale-Bopp," and led eclipse expeditions to Iran in 1999 and Zimbabwe in 2001 as acts of what he called "science diplomacy." In 1993, he founded what is now the Earthrise Institute in Cloudcroft, focused on science education and international outreach. Over his lifetime, he logged 534 separate comet observations and a total of 8,150 visual observations, according to The Olympian.
Comet Hale-Bopp is not expected to return until approximately 4385 AD. That means Hale's name is tied to one of the solar system's longest-lasting landmarks. His wife, Vickie Stone Moseley Hale, confirmed his death. He had been in declining health. After confirming the comet discovery in 1995, Hale reportedly "took his life in his hands" to wake her so she could see it too.
