Nio Strategic Metals Maps Oka Carbonatite and Plans Nine-Hole Drilling

Nio Strategic Metals says a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey has clarified the three-dimensional architecture of its wholly owned Oka carbonatite property in Quebec and identified zones that may host rare earth element mineralization. The 2023 survey covered 921 line-kilometres across the North and South Rings, while the interpretation combined the data with 70 years of drilling, mapping, trenching and academic research. Exploration at Oka historically focused on niobium, but the company says associated rare earth minerals and thorium anomalies provide new targeting opportunities. Interpretation identified five major northwest-southeast-trending dyke structures in the North Ring and suggests they may connect at depths greater than 800 metres. Nio distinguishes rare earth mineralization associated with niobium minerals, phosphates and carbonates, and has proposed a nine-hole reconnaissance drilling program totaling about 4,460 metres; selected historical samples reportedly returned 1.5% to 4% total rare earth oxides.
The survey was flown by Prospectair at 25-metre line spacing, with the magnetometer operating at an average height of 33 metres and the gamma-ray spectrometer at 52 metres; the spectrometer measured potassium, uranium and thorium.
The five North Ring structures identified by the interpretation are specifically named the Husereau, Manny Nord, Manny, Bond and Central structures, all aligned with the carbonatite’s northwest-southeast elongation axis.
Nio’s three REE categories include mineralization associated with niobium minerals such as pyrochlore, perovskite and niocalite; phosphates including apatite, monazite and britholite; and carbonates such as ancylite and bastnäsite.
The company said the REE minerals show a strong correlation with thorium anomalies, which could provide a practical geophysical signature for prioritizing future exploration targets.
The shift toward REE exploration is supported by analyses dating back to 1958, as well as more recent work including Impact Global Solutions’ metallurgical study cited by Nio in its announcement.
