Railway Ministry Extends Vande Bharat Express to Connect Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Goa

One account says the extension will run via Subrahmanya Road and Kabaka Puttur, rather than the Hassan–Udupi–Karwar routing described elsewhere; the final route and stopping pattern therefore remain unclear.
The extension followed specific advocacy by two Karnataka representatives: H.D. Kumaraswamy said he proposed the Bengaluru–Madgaon connection and wrote to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on December 23, 2025; another report says Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta requested the extension on August 6, 2025.
The extension follows successful trial runs of a 16-coach Vande Bharat rake on the Yesvantpur–Mangaluru route, including tests on the Hassan–Mangaluru ghat section to assess performance, safety and running time.
A separate administrative change gives the Mysuru division exclusive control of emergency-quota seats for trains from Mangaluru toward Bengaluru and the Konkan route; for trains toward Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, Palakkad will manage two-thirds of the quota and Mysuru the remaining third.
India's Railway Ministry has approved an extension of the Madgaon–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express to Yesvantpur in Bengaluru, creating the country's first direct high-speed rail link between Bengaluru, coastal Karnataka and Goa Swarajya Mag. The new service will operate as Train Nos. 26655/26656, though the exact route, stopping pattern and launch date remain unclear. Economic Times reports the train will run via Hassan, Udupi and Karwar, while News Karnataka indicates it may use Subrahmanya Road and Kabaka Puttur instead.
The extension follows advocacy by Karnataka politicians and successful trial runs of a 16-coach Vande Bharat rake on the Yesvantpur–Mangaluru route. Daily Hunt confirms the train numbers and basic route, though passengers traveling for business, tourism and pilgrimage have waited months for the final schedule. Kerala's hopes for a separate Vande Bharat service to Kozhikode remain unfulfilled.
H.D. Kumaraswamy, a senior Karnataka leader, pushed for the Bengaluru–Madgaon connection and wrote directly to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on December 23, 2025. Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta requested the extension back in August 2025. Both politicians cited growing demand from travelers and businesspeople who needed faster access between the three regions.
No single account of the route has emerged. Economic Times describes the train running via Hassan, Udupi and Karwar through coastal Karnataka. But News Karnataka reports the extension will instead use Subrahmanya Road and Kabaka Puttur. Railway officials have not clarified which intermediate stops the train will serve or how long the journey will actually take.
Before approving the extension, Indian Railways ran a 16-coach Vande Bharat rake through the Yesvantpur–Mangaluru corridor, including critical tests on the Hassan–Mangaluru ghat section. News First Prime reports these trials assessed the train's performance, safety and running times on steep mountain grades. The successful results gave officials confidence the fast train could operate reliably on the route.
India's Railway Ministry has reassigned how emergency-quota seats are managed on coastal routes. The Mysuru division now has exclusive control of such seats for all trains heading from Mangaluru toward Bengaluru and the Konkan line. For trains running toward Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, Palakkad will manage two-thirds of emergency seats and Mysuru will handle the remaining third. This restructuring aims to reduce bottlenecks and speed up passenger booking.
