ONGC Discovers New Gas Reserve in Odisha Deepwater Basin

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri spudded the well on July 25, marking the formal start of the drilling campaign.
ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, along with directors Vikram Saxena and O. P. Sinha, visited the Platinum Explorer drillship on August 27 and met the team conducting the campaign.
The discovery was made in the deepwater section of the Mahanadi Basin, which is described as covering a large area with significant offshore hydrocarbon potential.
ONGC shares closed 1.22% higher at Rs 235.63 on the NSE following news of the discovery.
India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC) has discovered natural gas in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, about 43 kilometers off Odisha's coast, marking a major milestone for the country's domestic energy exploration DevDiscourse. The MN-DW18-1-H-D deepwater well struck gas at depths between 1,441 and 1,452 meters after drilling to 1,623 meters total, producing encouraging flow and pressure results Drilling Contractor. The discovery was made under ONGC's Samudra Manthan exploration campaign and is the company's first well in the Mahanadi Basin under this initiative DNA India.
While the discovery is significant, ONGC has not yet confirmed commercial viability and will need further appraisal to determine the reservoir's size and recovery potential DNA India. The well's proximity to shore and India's new 2025 petroleum rules allowing shared infrastructure could speed up development if commercial quantities are confirmed, potentially boosting the country's efforts to reduce energy imports DNA India.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri formally spudded the well on July 25, officially launching the drilling campaign DevDiscourse. ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, along with directors Vikram Saxena and O. P. Sinha, visited the Platinum Explorer drillship on August 27 to meet the team and review operations The News Mill. The Samudra Manthan initiative represents India's push to accelerate offshore exploration and unlock the country's hydrocarbon reserves.
The Mahanadi Deepwater Basin covers a large area off Odisha's eastern coast with significant unexplored hydrocarbon potential The News Mill. The discovery in such a large basin suggests there may be additional gas reserves waiting to be found in the region. Proximity to existing infrastructure and coastal facilities could make future development more cost-effective than other deep-offshore projects.
The next phase requires appraisal drilling to measure the reservoir's actual size and determine how much gas can be economically recovered DNA India. Current results show promising flow rates and reservoir pressure, but these early indicators don't guarantee commercial success. ONGC must prove the field contains enough gas to justify the infrastructure investment before moving to production.
ONGC shares jumped 1.22% to close at Rs 235.63 on the National Stock Exchange following the discovery announcement. Investors view new domestic gas supplies as a long-term benefit to India's energy security and ONGC's growth prospects. The discovery underscores India's commitment to reducing dependence on energy imports and developing locally controlled energy resources.
