Meta Unveils 100-Gram VR Glasses Scheduled for Release in Spring 2027

Meta has unveiled $1,299 VR glasses, planned for spring 2027, that weigh about 100 grams by moving computing hardware and the battery into a tethered puck. The design aims to make immersive experiences more comfortable and wearable, with hand and eye controls and support for games, films and live sports, though the glasses have not yet been independently reviewed. Early comparisons suggest Meta is prioritizing reduced bulk over some of the Vision Pro’s advantages, including a wider field of view, stronger light blocking and more polished software. Reports say Apple’s Vision Pro project faces internal uncertainty, with its next headset under debate and a puck-based design among the concepts being considered. The competition underscores a broader question for premium headsets: whether consumers will favor lighter, less immersive devices or heavier systems focused on visual quality and an all-in-one experience.
Meta says the glasses use a 5K micro-OLED display and can play media for up to three hours; it also says any flat surface can serve as a virtual keyboard and touchpad.
Meta says the glasses are the first VR device certified IMAX Enhanced. The company is also working with filmmaker James Cameron on native 3D films, including a Billie Eilish concert film, and has a Disney deal covering 3D films and immersive broadcasts of more than 100 live-sports events.
The external processor puck reportedly includes 128GB of storage, a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage, and a USB-C passthrough port for streaming external devices into a virtual workspace.
The glasses reportedly support prescription lens inserts that users can tailor with a smartphone scan and snap into the device’s clear lenses.
