NATO Allies Halt Russian Covert Cable Drill Near Norway Svalbard Archipelago

The two fiber-optic cables linking Svalbard with mainland Norway are each about 1,400 kilometers long and lie as deep as 2,700 meters below the sea. They carry satellite data from SvalSat, described as the world’s largest satellite ground station and part of NASA’s Near Space Network.
The operation also underscored the strategic importance of the roughly 400-mile-wide Bear Gap between Svalbard and mainland Norway, a maritime route Russian nuclear submarines based on the Kola Peninsula would use to reach the Atlantic.
The cables are critical not only to internet connectivity but also to global financial transactions; Reuters’ account noted that subsea cables have been targeted in past conflicts, including the First and Second World Wars, when they carried orders by telegraph and telephone.
The officials said British and Norwegian representatives subsequently raised the findings with Moscow, while Norway’s Defence Minister Tore Sandvik cautioned that escalation in the High North was “in no one’s interest.”
